VIVA Beer’s mission is to create a high-quality and approachable beer.
VIVA Beer started as a shared hobby between neighbors; then brew days turned into gatherings with friends and family. After a short time, we started sharing our brews in local community events.
THE STORY BEHIND VIVA
We (Bobby and MJ) were backyard neighbors hanging out with our families one night when we discovered we both shared a passion for brewing beer. Because we are both type “A” personalities, we took the hobby to the limit. Brew days turned into mini-gatherings with friends and friends of friends. We were asked to share our brews at local community events. As time has progressed, we received lots of positive feedback and our fan base began to grow rapidly.
It was at this point our wives gave us some solid advice, we either need to open a brewery or shut down the Instagram account. That was an easy decision, especially when we came up with the name Viva. The name felt right, especially with the idea that we wanted to focus on San Antonio. Our mission came together, we honed in our recipes and the idea for a brewery became reality.
Our hope is that our beers become a part of all of San Antonio’s celebrations. That we can give back to an amazing city, that we build something that lasts, and are known for our values.
We really appreciate all of you that have helped us get this far and those who are starting the next leg of the journey with us.
MEET BOBBY JONES
Co-Founder: Brains of the Operation
I was born in Houston and visited San Antonio often during my childhood. I traveled to Fort Worth for college and afterward began my career in New York. I met my lovely wife shortly thereafter and started raising my wonderful family in Dallas. I jumped at the opportunity to move to San Antonio in early 2016 and am loving life in the Alamo City.
I began homebrewing in 2011 after buying a turkey fryer that apparently allowed me to make my own beer as well. I quickly fell through the rabbit hole and took my hobby to the next level. I’ve dreamed of launching a brewery since the first bottle of beer I made.
I always love trying a new beer. My refrigerator is a bit like my iPod playlist, with a little bit of everything and no real connection.
MEET MICHAEL “MJ” JOHNSON
Co-Founder: Chief Cook and Kettle Washer
I was born in El Paso, but moved to San Antonio in the 3rd grade. After graduating from high school, I went to Texas Tech University, where I met my beautiful wife, Nicole. We soon moved back to San Antonio, married, and had two amazing little girls.
In the thick of working and raising children, I developed a strong passion for brewing beer. This intensified and soon lead to the start of Viva Brewery after my neighbor Bobby and I met and started designing beers together.
My favorite style beers are citrusy, light, refreshing, and sessionable. I really enjoy being outside and cooking with my family.
